Sony has not yet accepted them
Microsoft's attempt to take over Activision Blizzard has been nothing if not messy, and now the latest franchise from Xbox parent company is offering some olive branch to Sony in the form of the Call of Duty franchise. More specifically, Microsoft will reportedly allow Sony to put Call of Duty on its PlayStation Plus subscription service for the first time. Bloomberg reports that Sony has not yet taken up the offer.
The easiest explanation for Microsoft's sudden change of heart is probably the FTC's lawsuit, which was filed against the company on suspicion that the acquisition would stifle competition in the gaming industry. If Microsoft allows its competitor more control of one of its most lucrative brands, there's a chance the ruling could be more in its favor.
What does this mean for the lawsuit?
We've already seen this strategy in action with Microsoft entering a 10-year deal to allow PlayStation to continue releasing the Call of Duty series on its platform, and Xbox chief Phil Spencer announcing a similar 10-year deal with Nintendo on Xbox last week. It doesn't seem like Sony is buying it, at least, because there's still concern that Microsoft might make Call of Duty an Xbox exclusive in the future, which would be a huge draw if that happened.
On top of all this, Phil Spencer told the Second Request podcast that Sony is trying to grow by "making the Xbox smaller," because they are "the main opponents of the deal [with Activision Blizzard]." I understand why Spencer is frustrated, but I don't think it's fair to say that Sony is the only opponent to the acquisition. For one thing, many casual fans, as well as those who know more about the business, are somewhat concerned that Microsoft will exhibit monopolistic behavior.
All I know for sure is that I personally love Call of Duty, and this whole thing makes him feel like a kid being used as a bargaining chip in his parents' divorce.
